Hanoi needs to work out solutions to ease traffic congestion

Raising people’s awareness about abiding by traffic laws is the bottom line and people should get used to using public transport. It is hoped that the effective operations of the public transport system will help the city tackle traffic problems in the future. Hanoi’s population is expected to reach 5 million by 2020. Such a population growth requires developing infrastructure facilities to meet the development speed of urban traffic. According to statistics, Hanoi has approximately 2.5 million motorbikes and 100,000 cars. In order to address traffic problems, Hanoi authorities recently stipulated that a land fund for developing transport infrastructure facilities will be established to ensure 25 percent of urban land area focused on building roads and parking areas. Although the master plan for urban development in Hanoi was approved by the Government since 1998, it only focused on developing new urban areas and did not address projects to upgrade key transport routes. Reality shows that developing transport infrastructure facilities and building new urban areas have not proceeded together as the transport and construction sectors have not closely co-operated to work out an appropriate master plan. In addition, the situation of building roads first and completing power and water systems later has become a common occurrence, causing great losses for the capital city. A transport expert from the Globe Environment Facility (GEF) Athony Mann warned that if no appropriate master plan for the transport and construction sectors is made, the environment will be adversely affected. Thereby, it is imperative to combine the development of transport facilities and the use of land fund, and work out a long-term strategy for development of the public transport system. In order to ease traffic congestion, top priority is being given to upgrading public transport facilities in Hanoi. This is considered the most effective solution and one that is widely applied in many countries. At present, the Hanoi bus system is only able to transport more than 4 million people per year, or 20 percent of the total demand. Hanoi is striving to increase the number of public transport vehicle users to 50 percent by 2015. To have more busses running in the city, Hanoi has recently allowed 2 private companies to engage in the public transport operations, while waiting for a major bus project to get off the ground soon. Traffic congestion in Ha Noi is a puzzle to observers. It is not only the reason for accidents but also waste time. So, we need to have some methods to prevent traffic congestion. In my opinion, we should to use public tranports, and people need to reduce speed when drive in Ha Noi. Beside that, decreasing traffic density in the rush hours is also a good method to solve traffic congestion in Ha Noi. Having many reasons why we have not stamped out traffic congestion in Ha Noi as originally hoped. I think that having so vehicles on roads in Ha Noi is the major reason. In addition, traffic project in Ha Noi is still weak. So,now all solutions are only band-aid measures. In the long term, authorities concerned need to have practical methods to prevent traffic congestion in Ha Noi. This is some solution to prevent traffic congestion in Ha Noi. The first way to fight traffic congestion is to do away with vehicle density in rush hours, because it often creat opportunities for congestion. In rush hour, we should to limit big car on narrow ways. In the future, transport industry need to build ways belt to reduce weight about vehicle for center roads. Don’t encroach sidewalks to business. And should to allocate kind of vehicles and lanes reasonably. Using public public means of transport is second solution to prevent traffic congestion. We should to use public tranports instead of other means such as car, motorbike… In the future, we should to build a system of subway in Ha Noi. It can be a good solution. Traffic congestion is a hot problem in Ha Noi now. It is not personal issue. It must be solved soon to save money and time for each person and whole of society.
